What is a HIN?

A HIN is a Hull Identification Number and is a unique series of characters and numbers assigned to your vessel and is usually moulded in the hull or engraved on a metal plate that is fastened in the hull. HINs are to be installed by either the vessel manufacturer (you if boat is self built) or an Accredited BoatCode agent.

Hull Identification Numbers are helpful as they make it easier to identify a vessel, and can provide a clear distinguish between one vessel to another. HIN can also deter vessel theft and assists in recovering stolen vessels.

What does a HIN look like?

The first two letters show where the boat was made.

The last two numbers show the year it was built.

For instance, AU-CCONWXXXXX404 means the boat was made in Australia in 2004.

How do I get a HIN or verify an existing HIN?

If you are looking to acquire a HIN or verify a HIN number you will need to contact a Boat Code Provider.

You will need to provide:

  • HIN Application form
  • Proof of identity
  • Boat registration certificate; or
  • Proof of acquisition / purchase such as a valid receipt or statutory declaration.

When you’ll be asked to provide the HIN:

  • On new vessels before initial registration
  • On the transfer of registration if the vessel doesn’t have one attached already (for example, when a commercial vessel is being sold for recreational use)
  • For second-hand vessels being registered for the first time.

CNC Marine DIY enthusiasts and builders are obliged to apply for a Hull Identification Number (HIN) in their respective state of residence to facilitate the registration process upon completion of the vessel. To simplify the registration process, we offer Australian Builder’s plates and HIN number plates.

Once you have obtained your HIN number, it is mandatory to have it engraved on the plate, professionally by a certified BoatCode agent before engaging in any water-related activities or individually installed. This ensures compliance with safety and registration regulations.

What is a boat code agent?

A Boat Code agent is a designated individual or organisation authorised by the relevant maritime authority, often the state maritime authority, to provide services related to the Boat Code program. These agents can include marine industry professionals, boat dealerships, or organizations affiliated with maritime safety and compliance. Boat Code agents offer services such as assigning HINs, providing information, documentation, verification and education. The specific roles and services offered by Boat Code agents may vary from state to state in Australia.
