When you’re building or fitting out a plate boat, the “little” decisions make or break your schedule. In this episode we answered listener questions about staying on top of brands, systems and components—and how to avoid the classic traps that cost time and money. Here are the biggest takeaways.
1) Engine choice is more than horsepower—it’s weight and balance
A 150 vs 140hp might look like a small step up, but many 150s weigh 80–100 kg more than a comparable 140. That difference changes weight distribution and can push a hull outside its sweet spot. We’ve literally redeveloped hulls mid-project when an owner upsized late in the piece—like with our 5001RA offshore runabout. Moral of the story: pick the engine for the hull, not the other way around. Compare weights, not just the badge.

2) Dash screens are getting huge—something has to give
Five years ago a 12″ was “big”. Now people want twin 16s or even 20s. Love the real estate, but be realistic: big screens steal space from doors, glove boxes and switches. You can’t have everything everywhere.

3) Why we don’t pre-cut everything (and you shouldn’t either)
We used to pre-cut rod holders and cup holders into gunnels. Ten happy customers, two furious ones who had to fill holes. Lesson learned. Standard kits now avoid “locking you in” to positions you might regret after you sit in the boat with your actual gear.

Use manufacturer templates for screens and accessories.

Mock up with tape, cardboard and mates in the cockpit before cutting.

Cut once you’ve lived in the layout—especially on your first boat.
4) Production vs custom: your schedule depends on repeatability
If you’re building the same model repeatedly, standardise your parts list and sequence. Personal preference still matters (some builders fit A before B), but consistency is your best friend for predictable timelines. For one-offs or first builds, keep details flexible until you’ve tested ergonomics in real space.
5) “Will my welds hold?”—real answers from real builders
Almost every plate boat will find a pinhole somewhere. That’s not failure; it’s the nature of a hand-built product. Structural integrity is about preparation, penetration and testing.
Practical testing ideas we discussed (and heard from call-ins):

Practice on scrap: Your kit offcuts are free training. Weld in the same positions you’ll use on the hull.

Beat-it test: Hit sample welds with a hammer; if your sample survives repeated abuse, the ocean will struggle to do worse.

Cut & inspect: Weld a sample, then cut it through the bead to check penetration.

Press/bend tests: Use a press or vice to bend welded coupons until failure to see where they let go.

Tank pressure tests: Light pressure tests on sealed compartments reveal pinholes fast.

Get inspected (for shop environments): Bring in a welding instructor/inspector for positional tests, NDT/x-ray where relevant, and ongoing apprentice check-offs.
Heat matters: Too hot can be worse than a touch cold on aluminium—watch for undercut and blow-through. Dial in with synergic settings by material thickness, then fine-tune wire feed and travel speed.
